One of the first whiskies off the Springbank bottling line at the beginning of the year - the 2014 edition of their rightly popular 12 year old cask strength. A touch of Springbank's trademark farmyardy smoke with a hit of rich sherried fruit thanks to the oloroso sherry cask matured whisky in the mix.
A litre of Buchanan's hard to find (in the UK at least) blend. 'Stunningly soft texture, enormously fruity with some firm grain through the middle and then spice. 85/100' Jim Murray's Whisky Bible 2005
A 2000 vintage Edradour, which was aged for 8 years in a hogshead before being transferred to an ex-Chardonnay cask for 4 and a half years. Released as part of the distillery's ongoing Straight From the Cask series of bottlings which use a variety of different wine casks to finish their whiskies.
A port wood finish Edradour from the Straight from the Cask series. Distilled on 23rd January 2001 and initially matured in hogsheads until 10th December 2010, the spirit was then moved to a port pipe and matured for a further 3 years, before bottling in December 2013.
Relaunched in 2011, Glenmorangie's sauternes-finished Nectar d'Or is now proudly boasting a prominent age statement that wasn't there before, proclaiming it to be 12 years old. Give it a couple of years and it'll be growing a weedy moustache on its top lip. IWSC 2012 Gold Medal Winner
A potent, high-strength 12yo single malt from Benriach with one extremely unusual feature - it's been triple-distilled. Horizons has also been finished in sherry casks after initial maturation in bourbon wood, and has been bottled without colouring or chill-filtration. IWSC 2011 Gold Medal Winner
The 2010 official release for Hazelburn, Springbank's triple-distilled, unpeated single malt, which is now fully mature. It's quite a colour too, suggesting some sherry influence in the final make-up. Well-priced, we expect this to go quickly.
'Yamazaki 12 year Old is a pioneering malt in Japan, for which Suntory deserve great credit. In its early days, it was rounded and delicate...now it is more intense, confident and elegant. 8/10' Michael Jackson, Whisky Magazine, Oct 2002 IWSC 2011 Gold Medal Winner - Best in Class
A stunning 12 year-old blend from Hibiki, some of the whisky has been part-matured in plum liqueur casks. Lovely malt from Hakushu and Yamazaki, plus some aged grain from Chita, this terrific Japanese blend picked up the top prize in its category at the World Whisky Awards 2010 IWSC 2012 - Gold Medal - Whisk(e)y Worldwide
An independent release of 1998 vintage from young distillery Braeval by Signatory for their Cask Strength Collection. Braeval only opened in 1975, but has already changed its name (from Braes of Glenlivet) and had a period of closure. It's quite rare, with no official distillery releases and only a handful of independents, but as distilling only restarted in 2008 after 6 years of downtime we will hopefully see more soon.
A 2001 vintage Caol Ila released by independent bottlers Gordon & Macphail as park of their Cask Strength Series. This was aged for 12 years in a pair of refill sherry casks before being bottled at 59.2% in November 2013.
Very popular at The Whisky Exchange Whisky Show 2012 this is a 12 year old Springbank distilled in April 2000 and bottled early in October 2012, matured for half the time in refill bourbon casks and half in fresh Calvados casks.
A beautiful presentation pack from Suntory, pairing up a bottle of Hibiki 12 year old with a delicate nosing glass, all wrapped up in a light wooden box. The whisky itself is an excellent example of Japanese blending: sweet, perfumed and fruity.
