In 1861 James Hardie set up a tea, wine and spirit merchant in Picardy Place in Edinburgh. After Hardie's son joined the company in 1880, he decided to move into blended whisky as J&W Hardie Ltd. The brand was sold in 1917 but was reunited with its founder in 1948. In 1996 J&W Hardie Ltd, was bought by the Tomatin distillery company, as the distillery wanted to enter the premium blended Scotch whisky market with an established and reputable brand.
