Broadly speaking, Speyside whiskies can be classified as falling into one of two camps. At one end of the spectrum there are the light, grassy, 'lunchtime whiskies' (please note that TWE advocates responsible drinking!) such as Glenlivet; at the other end lie the rich, sweet, sherried qualities of Glenrothes and Macallan. A cut above the standard-issue 12yo, Glenlivet 15yo is finished, as the name suggests, in Limousin French Oak (the same kind that is used for many cognacs). International Wine & Spirit Competition: Gold Medal; Best in Class
A 1995 vintage Glen Keith, bottled by Signatory for their Un-Chillfiltered Collection. Distilled on November 8th and matured in a pair of hogsheads for 17 years before being bottled on 8th November 2013.
Cù Bòcan is a mythical hellhound who has stalked the residents of the village of Tomatin for centuries. As a 'tribute' to him, Tomatin have produced this lightly peated whisky, which has been matured in a combination of ex bourbon, ex sherry and virgin oak casks.
Batch 46 of the increasingly popular full proof sherry monster from Aberlour, A'bunadh. This one follows close on the heels of batch 45 and promises the usual combination of active sherry cask maturation and punchy strength.
A Connoisseurs Choice bottling of Glen Elgin, one of the key malts in the White Horse blend. Brilliantly, this has been bottled at 46% - previously unusual for Gordon & Macphail's CC range, but hopefully a marker of things to come.
Another great looking Glenrothes from Signatory, stylised as Glen Rothes on the label, as usual. This is an 16 year old from a single refill sherry butt. Distilled on 2nd June 1997, bottled for the Un-Chillfiltered Collection on 6th November 2013.
A richly coloured 16 year old single cask whisky distilled at Glenrothes on June 2nd 1997 and then bottled on December 16th 2013 by Signatory for their Un-chillfiltered Collection after maturing in a refill sherry butt.
Balvenie Signature 12yo replaced the fondly-remembered Founders Reserve 10yo as the staple in the distillery's range. This is a marriage of Sherry, Bourbon and Refill casks and, as always with Balvenie, it's a polished, mellow whisky to relax with.
Please note this is limited to three bottles per customer.
A 2001 vintage Aberlour that has been exclusively matured in casks made from Quercus Alba - American White Oak. This steps away from the distillery's usual sherried style, emphasising coconut and vanilla from the cask and fruit from the spirit.
An distillery-bottled 15yo Tormore at 46%, originally released some time around the end of the 1990s when the distillery was still owned by Allied Domecq. This bottling has become rarer and rarer since being replaced by the official 12yo in 2004.
