A superb luxury Guatemalan rum. Botran's rums are aged in a solera system high up in the mountains, and the solera is fed with a proportion of rums aged in sherry and port casks as well as ex-bourbon. The rums used for Solera 1893 are made with virgin sugar cane honey and are matured for between 5 and 18 years before going into the solera.

A spiced version of Bundaberg, Australia's biggest 'rum' export. Unfortunately we can't call it rum because it's less than 37.5%, but it's still the same old Bundy with an extra slab of spice.

A very handsomely presented decanter-style bottle of Plantation Extra Old rum from Barbados. Unusually, the rums are initially aged in the Caribbean in ex-bourbon casks, before being transported to the Charente (home of the bottlers, Cognac producer Ferrand) and undergoing a second maturation in small French oak casks. 94 points from the Beverage Tasting Institue in Chicago.

An awesome rum - winner of a Platinum medal and ranked in First Place by the prestigious Beverage Tasting Institue in Chicago, with a whopping 97 points. Interestingly, now that industry giants Diageo are distributing Zacapa, the '23 years old' age statement has suddenly been dropped and replaced with a somewhat more plausible claim - the rums used are aged between 6 and 23 years old and are blended together in a solera.

Blended by a former maestro ronero for Havana Club, Zafra is a pleasingly rich but interestingly dry rum with a perfectly silky mouthfeel and superb balance. Marvellous stuff.

A truly superb dark golden rum made in Bermuda by Gosling's, who are of course much more famous for their Black Seal rum of Dark 'N' Stormy fame. To overlook this complex sipper would be a mistake, however - we think it's a hidden gem.
