Dark golden rums have spent a relatively longer period ageing in oak casks, often picking up great depth of character. These rums are therefore usually unsuitable for all but the very poshest cocktails and should really be enjoyed neat or with a single ice cube.
23 different rums, from 7 different countries (Trinidad, Jamaica, Guyana, Barbados, Java, Panama and Guatemala), have been blended together under the watchful eye of Masterblender Arnaud de Trabuc. Banks 7 is named in tribute to the 7 unique styles of rum used to create this stunning drink.
A superb luxury Guatemalan rum. Botran's rums are aged in a solera system high up in the mountains, and the solera is fed with a proportion of rums aged in sherry and port casks as well as ex-bourbon. The rums used for Solera 1893 are made with virgin sugar cane honey and are matured for between 5 and 18 years before going into the solera.
An awesome rum - winner of a Platinum medal and ranked in First Place by the prestigious Beverage Tasting Institue in Chicago, with a whopping 97 points. Interestingly, now that industry giants Diageo are distributing Zacapa, the '23 years old' age statement has suddenly been dropped and replaced with a somewhat more plausible claim - the rums used are aged between 6 and 23 years old and are blended together in a solera.
A handsomely-presented gift set with two glasses accompanying a bottle of Venezuela's greatest export (apart from all those Miss Worlds) - the equally stunning and lipsmackingly tasty Diplomatico Reserva Exclusiva.
Ron Cubaney was a brand that was originally produced in Cuba, however the family are now in exile in the Dominican Republic. Aged in the traditional Cuban method in a solera system using both American bourbon and French wine casks, this is rich and complex.
A truly superb dark golden rum made in Bermuda by Gosling's, who are of course much more famous for their Black Seal rum of Dark 'N' Stormy fame. To overlook this complex sipper would be a mistake, however - we think it's a hidden gem.
Originally aged in ex-cognac casks, this 2002 vintage rum from the Reunion Island's Savanna distillery has been finished for six months in sherry casks for extra smoothness and a layer of fruity sweetness.
Named after the Spanish term for the sugar cane harvest, Zafra Master Reserve is a premium Panamanian rum matured for at least 21 years in casks that formerly held bourbon. Blended by a former maestro ronero for Havana Club, Zafra is a pleasingly rich but interestingly dry rum with a perfectly silky mouthfeel and superb balance. Marvellous stuff.
Clarke's Court #37 Blend was released in 2010 to coincide with the 37th anniversary of the island's independence from the British Empire. Coincidentally, the buildings that house Clarke's Court distillery first produced rum back in 1937. This is aged for 8 years in oak before bottling.
