Dark golden rums have spent a relatively longer period ageing in oak casks, often picking up great depth of character. These rums are therefore usually unsuitable for all but the very poshest cocktails and should really be enjoyed neat or with a single ice cube.
A truly superb dark golden rum made in Bermuda by Gosling's, who are of course much more famous for their Black Seal rum of Dark 'N' Stormy fame. To overlook this complex sipper would be a mistake, however - we think it's a hidden gem.
Originally aged in ex-cognac casks, this 2002 vintage rum from the Reunion Island's Savanna distillery has been finished for six months in sherry casks for extra smoothness and a layer of fruity sweetness.
Named after the Spanish term for the sugar cane harvest, Zafra Master Reserve is a premium Panamanian rum matured for at least 21 years in casks that formerly held bourbon. Blended by a former maestro ronero for Havana Club, Zafra is a pleasingly rich but interestingly dry rum with a perfectly silky mouthfeel and superb balance. Marvellous stuff.
Clarke's Court #37 Blend was released in 2010 to coincide with the 37th anniversary of the island's independence from the British Empire. Coincidentally, the buildings that house Clarke's Court distillery first produced rum back in 1937. This is aged for 8 years in oak before bottling.
Not to be confused with Zacapa Centenario, this Fundacion 20yo is made by Centenario Internacional, who hail from Costa Rica. Sweet and easy-sipping, this is a rum of complexity and depth, and is packaged in a rather fancy leather jacket.
R. St Barth Chic Rum is an agricole rum from the island of St. Barths in the Caribbean. Aged for 4 years in re-charred ex-bourbon barrels before being bottled at 40%, this would make a sweeter 'Ti Punch.
Matusalem 23 Gran Reserva Rum is aged in a traditional solera system. Produced in Dominican Republic, the company's history goes back to 1872. A rich and toasty rum that's perfect for sipping by the fire on a cold evening.
A bottle of Depaz Rhum Agricole Vieux VSOP. Produced using sugar grown at the foot of Mount Pelée on the French-owned island of Martinique. A complex rum that is equally at home being sipped neat as a postprandial drink as in a variety of cocktails.
