We all have our regular drams, drinks we turn to time and again, whisky or otherwise. But as the year comes to its chilly end it's time to reach for something a bit special. Unless you're one of the lucky people barbequeing in December down in the southern hemisphere, in which case it's time for a Summer party!

To help you celebrate the end of 2011 in style we've put together a list of interesting spirits that are a step up from the day to day.

A beautiful hogshead of Glengoyne 1990 bottled for The Whisky Exchange. Creamy melted vanilla ice-cream on thick crust baked apple pie. Glengoyne's lack of peat leads some to regard it as a worthy but dull whisky, but the truth is that the spirit made here is of remarkable quality, and when it gets into the right cask the results are magical.

The peak of the Diplomatico range, as created by Golden Barrel Awards 2011 Master Rum Blender of the Year, Tito Cordero. Ambassador is matured in ex-bourbon barrels before finishing for a couple of years in Pedro Ximinez casks to give a big, rich and fruity rum.

A rich and leathery entry in A E Dor's Vieilles Reserve range. "An ardent, masculine nose. A powerful attach in the mouth, which can be surprising", say their tasting notes.

An update to the much vaunted Bunnhabhain 25 year old, keeping the same age statement and presentation but upping the ABV to 46.3% to bring it line with the rest of the range. A great whisky at 43% but even better now with a little more oomph.

A 30 year old whisky from north Speyside distillery Benromach. The spirit in this was distilled back before its 1983 mothballing and subsequent 15 years of silence.

Scapa 1980 is a belter of a malt from a distillery frequently overlooked in favour of its more famous Orcadian neighbour, Highland Park. Well-presented and bottled at natural cask strength for added oomph.

The ne plus ultra from Jameson, this has been blended with some of the oldest and rarest whiskeys from Jameson's maturing stock - one of which was a pot-still whiskey matured in a port pipe, which adds an extra fruitiness to the final assemblage. More than justifies the price tag - this is one of the greatest Irish whiskies ever bottled, we feel.

Only the second official bottling of whisky from closed distillery Glenugie in recent times, following the previous 32 year entry with this 1980 vintage 30 year old. The distillery closed in 1983 and has since been demolished, and bottlings in general are quite rare.

A 1973 vintage whisky from Inverleven, a malt distillery that operated from within the Dumbarton grain distillery complex until 1991. This is part of Chivas Brothers's Deoch an Doras series, roughly translated as 'One for the road', and was bottled in 2011 at 37 years old.

A long-aged distillery-bottled Bowmore, a large proportion of the casks used to assemble this 25yo are ex-sherry, giving sweetness and depth to this complex, fruity Islay malt.

The first of Glenglassaugh's Chosen Few series of single cask bottlings, as chosen by the distillery team. This one is the selection of Customer Account Manager Ronnie Routledge and has the combination of tropical fruit and sherry character that he loves in a whisky.

One of the most consistently excellent of the super premium releases from Diageo, this cask strength Talisker 30yo is vatted from a mix of refill American and European oak casks and sadly limited to less than 3000 bottles worldwide.

The cask strength bottling of Laphroaig 25yo is a very different beast to the old 25yo (and in our opinion, upping the strength is a big improvement). Rich and smouldering, with a big coal hit and a lingering seaweed character. We said at the time that this was tremendous stuff, and now it's only gone and won the IWSC Trophy for Best Cask Strength Single Malt.

A remarkably well-priced 40yo from Glenfarclas range; simply-packaged just like the distillery's standard bottlings, and bottled at a perfect drinking strength of 46%. A 40yo sherried Speyside designed for drinking rather than sitting on a mantlepiece or in a display cabinet - bravo. Awarded a very well-merited Gold Medal at the Malt Maniacs Awards 2010.

Another outstanding sherried The Glenrothes vintage bottling, this time from 1978. Bottled in 2008, this was rated at 90.5 points in the Whisky Bible by Jim Murray, who found gooseberries, tobacco, honey, sultanas and vanilla pods amongst its many charms.

A beautiful 40 year old vintage Glen Garioch, bottled by the folks at Morrison Bowmore for The Whisky Exchange and released at The Whisky Show in 2011. 1971 Glen Garioch is known for being more peaty than usual, and this delicate, restrained old school dram has a lovely thread of smoke, plus tropical fruit and medicine cabinet aromas. Fabulous.
