The first new Makers Mark recipe for at least 50 years, Maker's 46 is named for the number of different wood 'recipes' they tried before getting it right. Bottled at 47% it is matured in part in barrels containing a 'ladder' of toasted new French oak barrel staves to give more spice, sweetness and vanilla.

My gut feeling is that if you like Makers you will definitely enjoy 46. Very heavy with oak and char, but some subtle sweetness that balances well. The spice is strong and upfront - no pulling punches with this bourbon. It drinks well with an ice cube or two, but I prefer it as a mixing bourbon - makes a great Old Fashioned. However, there are better options at this price point.

A good Christmas pour with lots of spicy sweetness - maybe close and cardamon ? A well constructed and fairly cerebral bourbon that is a must for any Maker's Mark drinker.
