I bought this for an early Christmas gift, and was not disappointed. This release of the 12yr Lagavulin was not without flavor. On the nose it had a light sweet smokey aroma, on the tongue it was evenly balanced between the smokey oak flavor and sweetness. The best part in my opinion about this scotch was the fact that it didn't melt the back of my throat, it had flavor and I was able to enjoy it.
By far my favorite single malt!! The smoke is incredible but not over bearing . Full of complex flavors sweet peat to a slight hint of salty sea air. I would recommend a splash of water to completely mellow out taste that will sip better than some 18 yr malts!!
cask strength is my favourite of the range, the flavour is intense and makes a nice change from laphroaig and ardbeg.
It's quite different from the standard 16 YO Lagavulin, that's for sure. An application of water certainly helps to draw out the subtle flavours. Very complex, intriguing finish.
Sharp, zesty, very peaty with that lovely coal-ash Laga taste. Very different from the 16... not as deep or rich, and missing the lapsang souchong notes, but it's not as caramelized either. It took me a while to appreciate the 12yo; at first I was disappointed. But over time it has won me over; it's a very welcome alternative take on Lagavulin, and frankly I welcome all the expressions I can get from this awesome distillery.
