Ledaig has an unenviable reputation, so this 4yo full-strength young sherry-matured 2005 single cask from Berry Bros will probably sit on the shelves gathering dust - which is a terrible pity as it's actually rather amazing. The fruity sherry influence is very evident without being cloying, while the sweetly peaty palate has a pleasant menthol character on the finish, and even at 62.7% it's a pleasure to sip neat. Peated Tobermory has no right to be this good; hats off, then, to BBR for unearthing this low-key classic. The open-minded will be handsomely rewarded for taking a punt on this.

Part 2. This does not behave like a 4 1/2 YO malt. It has the freshness and aggression of a young malt, but the weight and flavour of a 12 YO. Have read it's Laphraoigy, but I get ashy-burnt herbs and leaves like Caol Ila. And choco-toffees. Take this risk.

Part 1. I took the plunge and can strongly recommend this malt.It does need 2 things: water and time. It can be a little aggressive at first and I find it almost impossible to smell no matter how much water I add. However, all this is rectified by allowing it to sit for about 45mins. Brilliant!
