Formerly a travel retail exclusive, the popularity of the Triple Wood has led to it being launched into the general market. The whisky starts off maturing in regular bourbon casks, before being moved to Laphroaig's bespoke quarter casks for a time. I also tried this H2H with the QC, and found that the Triple Wood is initially less complex on the nose & mouth in comparison. However, a stronger driving warmth of peat soon comes through, with the sherry characteristics also prevalent. A good acquisition to any liquor cabinet for something different. However, my palate prefers the QC and Talisker.

No gig tonight, so I’m H2H with 3 wood and QC.. At first the QC seems to edge it. Wilder, more complex, more "trad." . But my QC has been open a lot longer. 3 wood is smoother, subtler, softer. Peat/ripe cherry/chocolate/farmyard nose reminds me of Uigeadal! . Big surprise on palate and finish is the sense of sucking tangerine boiled sweets in a farmyard. QC better? I'd say it's a "mood thang." Enjoy the 3Wood for what it is - great whisky by any standards.
