Got this a as gift, which more less is the only good thing about it. As a great Caol Ila 12, 18 and 25 YO fan, this bottle is a huge dissapointment and I'd be really furious if I paid good quid for this. It doesn't have any of the so much desired Caol Ila characteristics - it lacks ioidine, smoke, peat, leaving a strong taste of alcohol. Of course over 30 years of maturation this whisky has something to offer, but it's really nothing special and worth remebering. In my opinion the cask used was most definitely a re-re-refilled old, slow cask, which might be the reason why the bottler did not state what kind of cask this was. To sum up - if you are looking for a refined, special old expression of Caol Ila, keep looking!
Got me one of these just after it had been bottled in the Spring this year - a cracker of a Caol Ila! Lots of 'Oomph' and lots of Caol Ila but in beautifil measured proportions due to the age.It doesn't say on the bottle whether is a bourbon or sherry cask, and honestly I didn't get much sherry cask character in it, but the high abv makes you think sherry cask, since they're normally give less to those pesky angels ;-)regards,Claus, Aalborg Whisky Club, Denmark
Does anybode know which cask type it is from?Refill sherry?
Surely impressive for a nearly 30 year old whisky.Distilled 1981 bottled 2011 makes 30 years, doesn't it? That makes the abv even more impressive.
Sherry cask on this one?
