The brand that Shackleton shipped to the Antartica for the Nimrod expedition in 1907, this is the Original Mackinlay. First registered in 1847, this is bottled as a 5 year old blended whisky and has a relatively high malt content for such a young blend, said to be around a third.

In the 60s and 70s Mackinlay's 5 year old was my favourite tipple. but in the late 80s the blend became very hard to find. Once they found the "Shackleton's cases in Antarctica, then started to re-blend to the old recipe, and now I have found an outlet...... I am a very happy chap. Cheers, Thomas
I have just done a comparison with the new Mackinleys Shackleton and the original 5yr old Mackinley and then gone back 1week later the Shackleton had improved, it has a little smoke, it is a good dram but for me you cannot beat the 5year old original slainte,
Bit of a hidden gem, this one. Got it at duty free in Bangladesh because they had run out of every familiar brand. I have to admit my hopes were not high but I was surprised and delighted to find that this is a actually a very good dram. Slightly more robust flavor than Grouse (maltier, peatier), perhaps just a little less robust than Teacher's. Good mouth feel, nose and complexity. Smoother than might be expected.
