Founded in 1836, the distillery is still owned by the family which bought it in 1865. The colour is amontillado, and the first impression is of sherry, with a touch of sandalwood, then a lovely aroma of stewed apricots and Victoria plums comes through. With water the sea scents are sweetened, with traces of caramelised toffee and a whiff of lavender. The flavour is classic Speyside - this is a classic Speyside - sweet like heather honey. Sipping whisky: excellent drunk straight.
