Glenlochy was constructed in Fortwilliam by the Glenlochy-Fortwilliam Distillery Co. in 1898, just in time for the worst recession the industry had seen. In the chaos following the collapse of Scotland's largest blender, Pattison's of Leith Ltd, the distillery was unable to begin production until 1901. It then fell silent during the Great War and subsequently struggled against the difficult post-war economic conditions - between 1919 and 1937 it is believed to have only operated for a brief period in 1925.
