Tasting Notes:

Tasting Notes by Tim F

Nose: Rich demerara notes, golden syrup & creamy vanilla. Oh, and a fistful of smoky peat.

Palate: Pepper & spice, iodine, brine, and of course that intense coal - the best signifier of Laphroaig to look for when tasting blind. Fiery, with woodsmoke also very prominent.

Finish: Lasting, peppery peat and lovely, lengthy rich malt.

Comment: The star turn in the Laphroaig range. On this evidence it's not difficult to see why this was voted 'Best Single Malt in the World' in Whisky Magazine's 'Best of the Best' in 2005.

Laphroaig Distillery
Part of the triumvirate of heavily-peated southern Islay malts, alongside LVMH's Ardbeg and Diageo's Lagavulin, Laphroaig was founded in 1810 by brothers Alexander and Donald Johnston (although the official year of start-up is given as 1815 on the company's labels and literature). The histories of Lagavulin and Laphroaig have been closely tied together, with Lagavulin said to have been founded by Alex and Donald's father, John.
