Although I do not get any peat in this 16 year old, it is a really good fruity whisky without the overbearing taste of sherry that some other Speysiders have.

I am not a huge fan of Speyside malts, but then I discovered Ben Riach...tasted the 12 y.o. first; smooth vanilla (ex-Bourbon cask I presume?) and (hey, let's not spoil the pleasurable surprise for they who are yet to discover this gem of a Distillery!) And then there were the peated malts, of which the (now discontinued - as a 21 y.o...) "Authenticus" matched any other great - just a different direction is all.

Benriach 16 is a well-balanced, complex, aromatic dram that is very easily drinkable with an overall fruity character, which is typical of a Speysider. Sweetness is not dominant, neither is peat (obviously). Pleasant and long finish. It is a very decent dram for the money, it may even be the best value 16 YO Speysider. It is a shame that it wasn't bottled at 46% ABV.

I was recommended this malt by one of the guys in the Whisky Exchange shop in London. He knows his stuff! This is a suberb malt for the money. Smooth as silk with many complex flavours and a lovely finish. Heartily recommended.
