March '09 30th Monday

A small, but very special, group today, including the latest flight of four releases from Number One drinks of the Hanyu 'Ichiro's Malt' Card Series - all of which have been bottled after finishing in different types of sherry casks.

And, as if that weren't exciting enough, we also have the special Bunnahabhain 1986 released for last year's Islay Festival Feis Ile.  This is a vatting of two vintage Spanish oak casks and should be a belter.

Last but by no means least there's the small matter of the new cask strength Laphroaig 25yo, bottled from a mix of bourbon and oloroso casks.  Tim got a sneak preview of this recently at a tasting hosted by John Campbell, Laphroaig's distillery manager, and was very impressed.  You can read his tasting notes here

Needless to say, these are all in very limited supply (with the exception of the Laphroaig, which should last a few months) and the most popular will sell out very quickly.

Coming Soon:  Laphroaig 18yo - you can read Tim's tasting notes here on the TWE Blog

The cask strength bottling of Laphroaig 25yo is a very different beast to the old 25yo (and in our opinion, upping the strength is a big improvement). Rich and smouldering, with a big coal hit and a lingering seaweed character. We said at the time that this was tremendous stuff, and now it's only gone and won the IWSC Trophy for Best Cask Strength Single Malt.

A bottling by Berry Bros of the much-overlooked Dailuaine distillery, this 1974 vintage was actually bottled in 2005. Dailuaine is one of the hidden gems of Speyside, as fans of the splendid Flora & Fauna bottling will testify.

Speyside Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Douglas Laing
An independent single cask bottling from Douglas Laing of workhorse malt Knockando, the majority of which normally goes into the J & B blend. Knockando is almost never bottled independently, so this is very interesting. Very light with a delicious honey-comb nose, this tastes younger than its fourteen years.

Amazing colour on this single cask Douglas Laing bottling of Laphroaig 1987, bottled at 50% from a refill hogshead. This should be tremendous stuff. Maritime and quite fruity for a Laphroaig, with ripe tangerines and mandarins on the nose and palate.

Something for everyone in this bumper crop!  The new Bladnochs are here, and if they're as good as the last lot we're in for a treat.  We also have BenRiach's new NAS smokebomb, Birnie Moss, a couple of new Bruichladdichs finished in casks from kosher winery Carmel, the new vintage Glencadam in a pretty bottle and a clutch of indy bottlings from rare or highly sought-after distilleries.

Stay tuned, as there's plenty more new releases coming up on this page in the near future.  If you're twiddling your thumbs, why not check out the TWE Blog?
