Another little collection of new kit for connoisseurs and collectors, with two special editions from Mackmyra, three ancient indie-bottled grains, some sought-after single malts and Drambuie's bells-and-whistles medal-winning special centenary edition, the 1745 Legacy.

The third of Mackmyra's special releases is a combination of the best 30-litre casks of both the company's malt recipes. The casks used are ex-bourbon, ex-sherry and new Swedish oak, and at only 30 litres each they speed up the maturation process immensely. The whisky itself is described as spicy, full-bodied and fruity.

Mackmyra's fourth special release is Double Dip Bourbon, named for its unique double maturation, beginning in larger bourbon casks before ending in smaller hand-made 30-litre casks. The whisky is descrtibed as crisp, fresh and fruity with a sweet spiciness.

Another in the series of amazing (and incredibly old) single grain whiskies bottled by Douglas Laing for their Clan Denny range. A bourbon-esque spice without the cloying sweetness, and a very intense, dry wood character.

After a bit of a drought of new bottlings (curse the holiday season) we find ourselves with a veritable feast of exciting new arrivals from Signatory/Edradour, including rarities from the likes of Mosstowie and Glenlochy - plus other distillery-bottled notables such as new expressions from Kilkerran and Kilchoman, the new edition 12yo Lasanta from Glenmorangie and a very handsome range of new bottlings from the previously rather neglected and unloved Fettercairn distillery.

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Author; Gavin D. Smith / Whisky Book
A splendid reference work from the ever-excellent Gavin D. Smith, the A-Z of Whisky is not only useful as a quick fact-checker, but is also packed with interesting explanations and clarifications of the minutiae (and indeed the lingo) associated with the world of whisky. Crucially, it's also subtly funny, elevating it well above a dry list of who's and whats.

A curious Edradour 10yo, bottled by independent bottler Signatory - who own Edradour. We're not sure why they've chosen to bottle this as part of the Un-Chillfiltered collection instead of as an official bottling (answers on a postcard). Nonetheless, it looks interesting - there's no info on the cask type, but at this colour for a 10yo, and with 908 bottles, we're guessing this might be from a sherry butt.

The Glenlochy distillery was closed in the early 1980s, and the whisky made there rarely sees the light of day as most of the malt produced there went into Diageo's blends, so this is indeed a rare treat from Signatory.

A very fancy packaging job for this limited expression of 24yo single malt from the Fettercairn distillery. Fior means pure or true in Gaelic, and this no-age-statement bottling launched in summer 2010 is something of a rebirth for the much-maligned Fettercairn distillery. Described by the producers as tasting of dark chocolate, coffee beans and peat smoke, with nutmeg, mint, citrus fruits and truffle. The finish is said to be of sherry trifle, marzipan and pineapple.

Please note this is limited to 1 bottle per customer.

Our new product of the month is our sister company Speciality Drinks Limited's historic bottling of the last official consignment of Royal Navy Rum - Black Tot.  Launched to commemorate the 40th anniversary of Black Tot Day, when the official rum ration was abolished by the Navy, Black Tot has been married from the remaining official Navy rum stocks, which were stored in stone flagons for nearly forty years before Speciality Drinks tracked them down.

Available to landlubbers for the first time, Black Tot is a genuine piece of rum and naval history.  You can read more about Black Tot on the official website here and check out Tim F's tasting notes on the TWE Blog here.
