An outstanding slew of new releases, with excellent whiskies of a variety of different kinds: we've got some very interesting indie-bottled releases from big names and more obscure distilleries; a highly-regarded blend of straight ryes; the official launch of duty-free fave Laphroaig Triple Wood; new distillery-bottled releases from the likes of Glen Garioch, Glencadam and the revitalised Tomatin (not to mention one of 2011's most talked about whiskies of the year, Glenmorangie Pride); a small crop of indie Macallans, plus the new 18yo vintage; two ancient grains from Scott's Selection; experimental American whiskey from Buffalo Trace, and a special bottling of Allt-a-Bhainne from Douglas Laing in aid of the Gurkha Trust.  Marvellous!

Lowland Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Fully matured in casks from famed St. Julien claret Chateau Lagrange, this small-ish batch Auchentoshan is pretty assertive at cask strength but mellows with a drop of water, and has picked up some attractive berry / fruit compote notes over its 11 years in the wine casks.

Highland Single Malt Scotch Whisky
Distillery Bottling
A very special edition Glenmorangie and one of the oldest whiskies they have on the market. Finished in Sauternes casks from Chateau d'Yquem, master distiller Dr Bill Lumsden describes the whisky as a 'pinnacle' of their boundary pushing efforts. Its ornate wooden box, which lowers the round bottomed decanter as it opens, has caused some discussion in the whisky community, but the quality of the liquid seems to hold up to scrutiny.

Scott's Selection
Bottled after three decades of maturation, the colour on this cask strength 1981 vintage Highland Park would suggest it spent its formative years in a bourbon or refill sherry cask, although we can't be sure as there's no info on the label. At this price we don't expect this one to hang around for long.

Formerly a travel retail exclusive, the popularity of the Triple Wood has led to it being launched into the general market. The whisky starts off maturing in regular bourbon casks, before being moved to Laphroaig's bespoke quarter casks for a time. The whisky is then finished in Oloroso sherry casks to gently sand off any remaining sharp edges.

The replacement for the 25 year old in the standard Tomatin line-up, the 30 year old is limited to just 2000 bottles a year and came about due to the fantastic reception of their last 30 year old release in 2007. Speciality Drinks Ltd
This is a cask strength edition of the wonderful Port Askaig 19 year old, bursting with fabulously flinty, lemony, seashells-on-the-sea-shore flavours. Although the alcoholic strength has only gone up around 4%, the result is a very noticeable jump in flavour intensity. A truly elemental whisky, perfect for swigging from hipflasks during cold winter walks.
