September '08 30th Tuesday

We've dug up some great new goodies for you this week, with party-size bottles from Glenmorangie and Compass Box and a clutch of lovely Nikkas (oooh, Matron!).  And as if that wasn't enough, we've also got the beautiful boxed expression of Compass Box Hedonism Maximus as well.  Never say we're not good to you.

Not only that, but at last we have Ulf Buxrud's wonderful new book on Japanese whisky, so you can educate yourself while dramming Eastern-style.

Meanwhile, over on the TWE Blog, our Octomore pictures from last week caused a bit of discussion.  So here's a taster for the next post:

'To Coat Or Not To Coat?'

"In the comments section of our last post on Octomore, drJarv (who I’m assuming is on the design team for Octomore as he hasn’t denied it yet!) asked for our thoughts on the coated opaque bottle that they’ve gone for with Octomore (Bruichladdich fans will remember that both Blacker Still and Redder Still were similarly adorned with this coating).

Poster bgulien immediately responded with a fair point that these coatings make it difficult to see how much whisky you have left.  I decided to throw my tuppence-worth in and started to write a quick comment - but it kind of turned into a bit of a rant and opened up a bit of a can of worms, so I thought I’d do it as a new post and throw the floor open for discussion:"

Exciting stuff, eh?  Oh.  Well, never mind.  You can read my Clarkson-esque rant here, anyway.

Japanese Blended Malt Whisky
The previous whiskies that Nikka have produced under the Taketsuru label have been vatted - sorry, 'blended' - malts from Nikka's Yoichi and Miyagikyou distilleries, and we have no reason to believe any different of this one, since Japanese distilleries tend not to swap stock with each other. The 21 yo Taketsuru Pure Malt won the 'World's Best Blended Malt' at the World Whisky Awards in 2007.

A no-age-statement 'vatted pure malt' (their description, not ours!). These days the SWA are campaigning to ban the use of 'pure' in the description of whiskies), from Nikka. This has been bottled at cask strength.

Ulf Buxrud
Ulf Buxrud is an important figure in the whisky world, being one of the famous Malt Maniacs, and the author of the definitive book on the Rare Malt series. To have such a learned and committed whiskyphile turn his energies to the emerging Japanese whisky scene is very exciting - and this is be a fascinating read.

Some more good stuff this week, including a sherried Port Ellen from Douglas Laing's McGibbon's Provenance range, a peated Famous Grouse and the return of two TWE favourites, Blue Hanger and John Glaser's sumptuous Orangerie.

Plenty to be excited about too, as this week sees the official launch of the TWE Blog!!!  This week we have a quick look at the sale of Glen Moray to French rum firm La Martiniquaise - plus some exclusive new pics of the soon-to-be-released Octomore and Port Charlotte PC7 from Bruichladdich - how cool is that?!

The famous Orangerie 'whisky infusion' from Compass Box, in simply beautiful packaging. Smooth, sweet Scotch whisky infused with the hand-zested peel of Navalino oranges and subtle accents of Indonesian cassia bark and Sri Lankan cloves. Orangerie is not officially liqueur as it doesn't have the requisite additional sugar - with this much flavour, it doesn't need it.

September '08 3rd Wednesday

Some great new stuff this week, including a new sherried Port Ellen from Douglas Laing (will they ever run out?!) alongside refill casks from Glen Scotia and St Magdalene.  In addition, we have two smartly-presented new releases from the cream of Tomatin's old maturing stock: a 30yo finished in ex-Oloroso casks for the final three years of maturation, and a 40yo vatting of seven ex-bourbon hogsheads.

In other news this week, Glendronach has been sold by Pernod to the consortium behind the miraculous revival of BenRiach - we wish them the best of luck and hope that they can work some more of their magic on another distinguished old Speysider fallen on hard times.

We've also been sent some great pics of the continuing work on Diageo's new Roseisle distillery - check out the birth of a behemoth below:
