October '09 27th Tuesday

Just a couple of things for you this week - but real quality, as you've no doubt come to expect.  In addition to the two latest tomes from Charles Maclean, we have two very special bottlings.

The first is our own Hakushu 1989 bottled from a single sherry cask at the eye-watering natural cask strength of 62%, and this is the first in a series of special TWE 10th Anniversary bottlings! We've got some really stunning malts from some of our favourite distilleries coming up between now and Christmas, so if you haven't yet subscribed to our New Products RSS feed (it's the big orange button at the top of the page), now's a good time to do it.

The other special bottling this week is a serendipitous marriage from our old friend John Glaser at Compass Box.  Lady Luck is an inspired combination of Caol Ila and Imperial, and when we tasted it we absoutely loved it.  Once again, hats off to JG and the Compass Box team.

Japanese Single Malt Whisky
A very special single cask Hakushu 1989 (we believe it's only the second ever release of its type) to kick off our exclusive 10th Anniversary bottlings. At an enormous 62%, this little belter is taking no prisoners: winner of a Gold Medal at the Malt Maniacs awards 2009 and 91 points from Serge Valentin's Whiskyfun.

Compass Box
A very special new bottling from Compass Box. Lady Luck is a vatting of three casks - two old Caol Ilas (from 1980 and 1984) plus a 1995 Imperial. The result is described by creator John Glaser as 'deeply smoky, mind-bogglingly complex...a whisky of ethereal beauty'.

The first distillery bottling of Benrinnes in aeons, this is a heavily-sherried number, very old-school with dark fruit, crème brulée, a hint of beef gravy and a touch of gun-metal. Released in 2009 as part of Diageo's Special Releases, this is far and away the best official bottling from this distillery.

October '09 15th Thursday

A mega-bumper week happening here, with the return of an old favourite from John Glaser (Spice Tree, now released from the bonds of pen-pushing halfwits at the Scotch Whisky Association) and annual staples from Ingvar Ronde and Jim Murray - essential reading.

We've also got a slew of exciting new releases, with some great stuff at the top end, including the final instalment of the new 1964 Bowmore Trilogy and the award-winning Yamazaki 1984.  For us mere mortals, there's the return of Glen Garioch with a couple of highly-rated vintage releases, a couple of typically-stylish Bruichladdichs, the latest in Douglas Laing's Anniversary series and a very tasty Balvenie plus a few other little gems like Auchentoshan, Tamdhu and Glen Spey.

In other news, we're running a free ticket prize draw for The Whisky Show 2009!  Entering the competition is very easy and you could win a pair of tickets for the event on Friday 6th November.  Check out the TWE BLog for more details:  http://blog.thewhiskyexchange.com/2009/10/the-whisky-show-tickets-prize-draw/

The 2010 edition of Ingvar Ronde's essential whisky companion is the fifth in the series, begging the question - how did we do without it before? New features this year include interviews with distillery managers and a series of in-depth articles on the distillation process.

Finally, we've managed to get hold of this Yamazaki 1984! Sukhinder came back from a trip to Japan in 2009 raving about this one, and since then it's started winning all kinds of acclaim. THE WHISKY SHOW 2009

The Whisky Exchange is proud to be involved with The Whisky Show, which is being held at the Guildhall in London on 6-7th November.  Co-hosted by The Whisky Exchange, the Show is all about premium whisky, food and enjoyment in a relaxed, informal environment.  With music from Roddy Hart and award-winning whisky-infused food, plus all your tasting samples included in the ticket price (tickets for our sensational Masterclasses are sold separately), the Show is a must for keen amateurs as well as more experienced aficionados and whisky connoisseurs.

Exhibitors at The Whisky Show include LaphroaigBalblair, Glenlivet, Glenrothes, Glenmorangie, Yamazaki, Dalmore and Highland Park, while Diageo will be pouring samples from this year's Special Releases

Meanwhile, The Whisky Exchange will be showing a range of exclusive releases from the likes of Hakushu, Longmorn and Karuizawa bottled especially for our 10th Anniversary - plus a new raft of releases for the Elements of Islay range, including Ar2, Lg1 and Pe1, which has just picked up 93 points from Serge at Whiskyfun!

You can check out all the latest news on what's on offer at the Show here.  And don't forget: ALL the whiskies exhibited for sampling are included in the price of your ticket!  There is NO voucher system at The Whisky Show - just turn up and take your pick from the most dazzling tasting line-up ever assembled in the UK.

In addition to all these incredible drams, we'll have some show-stopping food from The Whisky Kitchen (included with your ticket, naturally) and live modern Scottish music from Roddy Hart in The Whisky Lounge

The Show will also feature some sensational Masterclass tastings, including the famous Glenlivet Cellar Collection and a vertical tasting of Port Ellen Annual Releases.  Masterclass tickets are sold separately and places are very limited - our Rare Malts tasting has already sold out and tickets for other classes are running low, so don't delay if you fancy one of these.
