Sailor Jerry Spiced Rum
70cl / 40%
This is the latest version of Sailor Jerry rum, which was re-formulated in early 2010 to bring it into line with the US recipe. This version contains less vanilla and lime than the previous edition and is more popular with bartenders. Try with cola or ginger beer with a squeeze of fresh lime, or mix with Red Bull for a 'Popeye'.

"Nose" Huge vanilla, oak, molasses, leather scent of an old baseball mitt, and egg nog. "Palate" Big vanilla of the nose, comes through mightily on the palate, chased by oak, brown sugar, chewy cedar, and maple sugar. "Finish": Nice long lasting flavors of spiced caramel, drying on the palate leaving balsa wood. The spiciness on the finish is reminiscent of a good measure of nutmeg you taste in egg nog.

This drink is bland and boring compared to the old flavour in my opinion. There are a lot nicer rum's on the market at present. If you want to try a nice tasting sailor jerry rum the whisky exchange do have some stock of the original - http://www.thewhiskyexchange.com/P-4552.aspx

This stuff is not as bad as some people say, I tried this first and have recently bought some 5cl mini bottles off ebay of the original, I agree with why people are annoyed at it being discontinued as its lovely compared to this! but if you've never had Sailor Jerry you'll find this ok, but in all honesty I find Captain Morgan's Spiced my favourite and have just bought a bottle of Bacardi Oakheart, which is quite nice neat! I still need to try mixed... going to try the Kraken next!

New Sailor Jerry isn?t worth buying
- Unclebadger, 6th Jun '11
New recipe is awful, without knowing the recipe had changed I knew something had changed for the worse.

I too was shocked at the change in recipe - the best description I can come up with is as if someone mixed old Sailor Jerry with regular (cheap) dark rum. It still has a hint of that old flavour, but only when you squeeze a whole lime segment into it!It's by no means terrible, but I won't buy it out of principle. Well, plus spite and sheer annoyance at the loss of my favourite drink [sniff]

It’s become very popular in bars. I'd never even noticed it before. Why? Good marketing but I imagine mostly down to the great bottle re-design (making more of the hula girl, as vintage stuff is in fashion). That coupled with the catchy vintage sounding name just makes it a winner right now. It's as simple as that. I like it and most people that try it with me say it's very sweet anyway - so I do wonder what the old one tasted like!? Would like to have tried it

I just tried SJ for the first time about 6 months ago here in the US and I like it; have bought several bottles in fact. I thought it was a little heavy on the vanilla though.

Its an outrage!! Cant believe they have destroyed my favorite drink!!! My friend told me they had changed the recipe and it now tasted terrible, i didn't believe him and bought a bottle..... suffice to say after one drink I had to give it away! Very disappointed there sales may have gone up temporarily but when people open the bottles they will never buy it again! Shocking BRING BACK THE OLD RECIPE
- Liam P, 21st Dec '10
The old rum was excellent.I cannot believe that it is no longer available. the new one is indeed undrinkable !!Every bartender i speak to agrees. Please bring back the old receipe!!!!

I call bulls*** on "is more popular with bartenders" - every bar I've been into recently has said that thir sales of Jerry have dropped considerably since the new recipe was released.Seriously, I've heard of the expression 'shooting yourself in the foot', but it seems to me that the good people at SJ went straight for their own kneecaps when they thought this would be a good idea.

I have a bottle of the new stuff, it going down very very slowly, there's no chance I'll ever buy it again unless the recipe changes back to the original. Sucks! Friend bought back a bottle of 'Kweyol' rum from St Lucia for me, amazing stuff, trying to track it down to buy more online. Please all try, you wont be disappointed, I promise.

New one is undrinkable.I was introduced to the old recepie by my flatmate who has just returned to Australia after 11 years. Wanted to send him a case as a welcome home gift. Can anyone help....even a bottle!
- anonymous, 9th Nov '10
i went to the rum festival at olympia this year and the sailor jerry stall was there. they said they will never bring back the original. they also said that the new one is very popular with more sales than the "original". Is this why all the supermarkets are selling it at discounted price. BRING THE REAL ONE BACK.
- HAMMERS901, 26th Oct '10
My sales have dropped drastically since the change surely the suppliers stock has been affected as well please please please bring back the original people on ebay are trying to make a killing selling at well above purchase price. lets all campaign to the manufactures.

I find it strange they say it's more popular with bartenders, I've been one for 9 years now and think the change they made was an awful decision, and every time I'm in a bar that serves it I ask their bartenders what they think, so far not one of them has said it's better!!

I was very much a fan of the old Sailor Jerry, with its hint of Liquorice and strong vanilla. The 2010 version seems to have lost much of its destinctive flavour. That said, if anyone remembers Bacardi Spiced Rum that came out nearly 10 years ago, then this is pretty close to it..
- Dave, 21st Aug '10
This version is boring. The old one was amazing . The smell of Vanilla was so strong you could smell it from a distance in a bar and know exactly what it was...now I wouldn't bother...
