Tequila is generally aged in oak barrels previously used to mature bourbon, which means they are already 'seasoned'. Reposado tequila (meaning 'rested') is aged between 2-11 months. This ageing period sees the barrel contributing flavours such as vanilla and creme caramel to tequilas earthy, spicy, herbaceous, vegetal character.
Introduced to the UK in Summer 2010, Calle 23 is a 100% agave tequila from the highlands of Jalisco, the Los Altos region. Double-distilled in copper pot-stills to retain the true agave character, Calle 23 is likely to be a hit in upscale cocktail bars.
An exciting new 100% agave tequila from the Camarena family (El Tesoro, Tapatio) in conjunction with Tomas Estes (Cafe Pacifico, La Perla). This has a subtle nutty, vanilla character from two months gentle ageing in oak.
This delicious reposado from Tapatio is rested for four months in ex-Bourbon casks to round out the flavour and tame the edges of the more robust Blanco. Without wishing to sound too much like Alan Partidge, this is Textbook Stuff.
Aqua Riva Reposado Tequila is intended to be a "bar" tequila, specifically for cocktails. It is produced from 100% Blue Weber agave. On the palate, there are hints of caramel biscuits and delicate ripe fruit. The brand is owned by comedy actress (amongst other things) Cleo Rocos.
A 100% agave reposado tequila from Tierra de Agaves, Lunazul is part-owned by Heaven Hill Dsitilleries. The brand has a marketing riff based on the 'spirit of the wolf', but we won't hold that against them.
Aqua Riva Premium Reposado tequila is produced from 8 year old blue agave and pure volcanic spring water from Jalisco. Aged for at least 6 months for a light and delicate flavour, this has notes of almonds, apricots and dark chocolate. The brand is owned by celebrity Cleo Rocos.
Aged for 11 months (just one month short of being classed as an anejo), Herradura claim to be the first company to age their tequilas in wood, making this the first ever reposado. Superbly integrated flavours.
El Ultimo Tequilas are made by Hacienda de Oro in Jalisco. The Reposado, like the rest of the range, is known for its notes of sweet, roasted agave. A delightful tequila for use in cocktails or for sipping on its own.
A step up from the standard issue Olmeca, the name 'Altos' refers to the highlands of the tequila-producing region in Mexico, where the best 100% agave tequilas are made. IWSC 2012 - Gold Medal - Tequila
