TamnavulinWater Jugs

The distillery's original owners Invergordon Distillers (owners of Isle of Jura) were snapped up by Whyte & Mackay (owners of Fettercairn and Dalmore) in 1993. W&M mothballed Tamnavulin two years later in 1995. After a series of identity crises, name changes, management buyouts and takeovers, Whyte & Mackay, including the Tamnavulin distillery, was sold to Indian tycoon Vijay Mallya’s United Spirits in 2007.

In the year prior to the takeover, Tamnavulin had been refurbished after a 12 year silence, with the three wash stills being replaced (spirits stills were scheduled to be replaced this year). Production recommenced at Tamnavulin in August 2007, the same month that the UB takeover was announced.

Tamnavulin is a relatively large distillery, producing 4 million litres/year, but under Invergordon & W&M, single malt bottlings were low priority and very unexciting. The only official bottling has been a 12 year-old. However, the spirit made at the distillery has been excellent from the beginning, as anyone who has tasted the legendary Matthew Forrest bottling matured in a Sandeman Cream Sherry cask will testify.
