A bottle of this highly unusual limited edition vodka from Chase distillery, which has been smoked with English oak for an intriguingly delicious flavour almost reminiscent of a fine reposado tequila or mezcal. This is superb, and was named as Best Potato Vodka in a recent taste-test by Harper's Wine & Spirit magazine.
Chase English Oak Smoked Vodka Reviews
Tasting notes by Class MagazineAppearance: (Forth Batch, bottle No. 807 of 1000) Crystal clear.
Aroma: Compared to the first batch this seems to have gotten smokier. It retains smoky bacon aromas reminiscent of Frazzles (bacon-flavoured corn based snacks) but now with more motes of smouldering oak fire in small room than out and bacon.
Taste: Smoked streaky bacon palate with oaky dryness, but not overpoweringly smoky, served with freshly grated black pepper.
Aftertaste: Lingering slightly salty, bacon, savoury finish.
diffordsguide rating: 5+/5 Outstanding
Tasting Notes by Tim F
Nose: Some honeycomb at room temperature, but less evident when served from the fridge. Alongside the creamy potato vodka aromas we associate with Chase, distinct oaky woodsmoke notes - almost like a particularly fine, subtle young reposado tequila with only a coupe of months of wood ageing.
Palate: Bonfire notes almost immediately, though again with a creamy sweetness balancing the palate, which retains Chase's trademark silky texture. Throughout, the smoke is evident without becoming over-powering or one-dimensional.
Finish: Wisps and tendrils of gentle woodsmoke linger on the tastebuds.
Comment: Another triumph for Chase, this is the most interesting vodka we've tried in 2010. The natural woodsmoke flavours have been woven into the palate over a week's infusion in a smoke chamber, and the result is really a delight.
