Tincup American Whiskey is the brainchild of Colorado-based Jess Graber. A distiller as a hobby for 30 years, he turned full-time in 2004. A high rye whiskey, made with a bourbon-style profile but more powerful and spicier, the cap also works as a cup.

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting notes by Billy A

Nose: Big spice and fruit - apple with cinnamon, clove and toasted, spiced brioche. Rich toffee and caramel, ginger nut biscuits and sweet oatcakes with honey.

Palate: Quite light with sweet grain, cinnamon spice and a trio of apple notes - ripe, skin and Jolly Ranchers. Toffee follows, with spicy rye and toasted fruit loaf.

Finish: Cinnamon toast, tannic raisins and soft caramel sweetness.

Regarding the claim of "Anonymous" that this is a high-rye bourbon from MGP -- not quite, and it isn''t bourbon at all. Tincup sourced two different bourbons from MGP (each one with a slightly different mashbill) and blended them together, but they also added some Stranahan''s Colorado Whiskey, which is distilled from 100% malted barley. With that malt-whiskey additive, this product cannot be legally labeled "bourbon," which is why the generic term "American Whiskey" is used in the name instead of "Bourbon."

Came across Tincup in Edinburgh recently, and had to have it! Not at all disappointed......a great whiskey! Great all round flavour.

Of course the story and the lovely pictures on the Tincup website are the usual humbug of a make-believe micro-distiller, but it''s a solid high-rye MGP bourbon and very drinkable. At the price, they should be able to afford bottling it at a slightly higher proof, though; I think that would be definitely beneficial. And I like the bottle concept.

Very good whiskey, well rounded flavor, only down fall is they don''t distill their own spirits.

Nice and smooth with good flavor characteristics, I can taste the rye, but it is more complex than that.
