Lp5 - Elements of Islay Reviews
Nose: Freshly charred wood and a background of sea air. Sweet spice and carbolic style smoke suggest those traditional medicinal notes.
Palate: A flavour of vanilla pods cooked in butter is set off against ripe citrus and pink peppercorns. The peat smoke is subtle and earthy.
Finish: Clementine and vanilla fall away to leave a herbal background smoke.

Tough choice between 3 and 4 stars. The nose is not that super. Austere wood, lack of usual iodine/cough syrup/medical tonic notes, some familiar woodsmoke, and some gym locker with used gear inside instead of the usual oak resin sweatiness (sauna smell). It's certainly Laphroaig in nature but kind of muted and not exactly the best side of the distillery, at least compared side by side to CS batch 003 (2011). However on the tongue with just a bit of water it's wonderfully smooth and has a very delightful taste, even though once again the complexity of the official CS isn't reached. Good news is that there's no bitter ashtray tar here (that I find in current QC and 10 and have been told people find in CS batch 005) so in that regard a safe choice. So, good balanced taste but nose falls a bit short and £70 for 50cl feels a bit rough. If you like Laphroaig and price doesn't matter, add a star.
