William Hawker created his recipe for sloe gin as far back as the 1790s, and Hawker went on to be the first sloe gin to be produced and marketed. Unfortunately, as the demand grew other major gin companies jumped on the berry bandwagon and out-resourced Hawker, whose sales eventually began to decline in sales.
