Benromach

Benromach

Single Malt Scotch Whisky

Benromach was founded in 1898 and today is the smallest working distillery in Speyside, employing just two people to make its whisky - current output is just 200,000 litres per year. The distillery is owned by independent bottler Gordon & MacPhail, which bought it in 1993, 10 years after it had been mothballed by previous owner United Distillers (later to become Diageo).

The distillery recommenced production of its single malt (which is peated slightly higher than other speysiders at around 8-12ppm) in 1998.

Since that time there have been myriad releases of Benromach, including a heavily-peated version called Peat Smoke, a slew of different wood finishes and single casks, and, in 2006, Benromach Organic- the first single malt whisky to be fully certified as organic by the Soil Association.

Situated on the outskirts of the ancient town of Forres, Benromach Distillery has had a chequered history, changing hands several times and also laying silent. The last time this elusive malt was bottled as a single malt appears to have been during the 1900's.

Gordon & MacPhail purchased Benromach in 1993 and history was made in June 1996 when they announced the revival of Benromach Single Malt Scotch Whisky, one of Speyside's best-kept secrets.

Work began in 1997 to re-equip the distillery with production equipment. This included two new stills, a new mash tun and wash backs which had been re-worked from the originals. The first spirit ran off the stills in the Autumn of Benromach's Centenary Year, 1998.

H.R.H. The Prince of Wales officially re-opened the distillery in October 1998. Since that achievement Benromach Distillery opened its doors to the visiting public in August 1999 and visitors are warmly welcomed in the Malt Whisky Centre, which was formerly the old drier house.

Benromach can now be enjoyed in several expressions; Benromach Traditional, an 18 year old, a 25 year old, a 1969 (43%) vintage expression and 1980 Cask Strength at 58.1%.
