The Glenrothes

the next grape adventure

Speyside distillery The Glenrothes has long been known for weighty, sherry-aged whiskies that are released as vintages. Now, however, it has launched The Soleo Collection: a range of five whiskies, ranging from 10 to 25 years old, which pay homage to the grapes from which some sherries, such as Pedro Ximénez, are made.

Once these grapes have been harvested, they are dried in the sun for several days, a process known as soleo that changes their colour and increases their sugar content. Each whisky in The Glenrothes Soleo range is matured in sherry casks and bears a label that reflects the colour spectrum of the grapes during the sun-drying process.

                      About
                      The Glenrothes

The Glenrothes was founded in 1878 and owes its existence to people who didn’t drink: the initial consortium of investors (who also owned Macallan at the time) fragmented after funding became difficult, and it was only through a loan from the teetotal United Free Presbyterian Church of Knockando that the remaining consortium members could get their project off the ground.

Long found in blends such as The Famous Grouse and Cutty Sark, The Glenrothes is today also prized as a single malt and known in particular for its vintage releases, which were started by then owner Berry Bros & Rudd in 1993.

This new range of age-statement whiskies, released in September 2018, marks a bold new direction for the Speyside distillery.
