Tasting
Clear, bright golden yellow. Sweet, vanilla, marzipan sherry nose with dried banana chip and maraschino cherry aromas. Well integrated, dry, yet sherried palate with banana cake and glacé cherry flavours. Sherried, vanilla finish with majestic leathery oak. 4.5/5.
Comment
Folk at Macallan used to talk about their 'Six Pillars of Spiritual Wisdom', one of which (number five) said: "Macallan is the only single malt to be matured exclusively in sherry casks", with dry oloroso sherry casks being favoured. Well, on one of my Saturday morning visits to The Whisky Exchange's shop in London's Vinopolis, I tasted a Macallan that reminded me of that fifth pillar. I bought a bottle for old time's sake.
Tasting Notes by Tim F
Nose
Very clean aromas, with golden syrup and clean malty notes. Balanced and well-polished, with honey and creamy milk chocolate aromas and a hint of damson jam. Not a really big rich fruitcake nose, but characterful and very appealing. Gets nutty and bready as it develops, with hints of cocoa and mocha.
Palate
Very pleasant roasted barley notes, and polished oak with the chocolate, mocha, honey and other aromas from the nose. Bitter orange marmalade. Warming spices mid-palate. Good grip and mouthfeel, not too slick or flabby. Very enjoyable.
Finish
Good length, but doesn't outstay its welcome. Warm and hearty with the oak meandering on and some nuttiness and pleasant ginger/nutmeg/clove spices.
Comments
A terrific autumn/winter dram. One for the hipflask on a walk in the woods.
