This is the old pre-2010 presentation of Bunnahabhain 12yo, bottled at 40%. A very lightly-peated malt, probably the mildest introduction to the Islay style. Floral and fruity tones dominate with the peat influence in the background. Picked up the top prize in its category at the World Whisky Awards 2010.

A beautiful dram,,, smooth, just a hint of peat, one of the best malts i've ever tasted.

Would recomend it to all newly whisky lovers. It makes a hard and long day for a mother of three well worth it, smell, sip and relax. Aaah, you beauty!

Contrary to some views I find this whisky full of depth, rich and with a hint of peat but totally different to other Islay whiskies. I recommend those that have tried it but not swayed to try this one again - it is a gem! I agree Lagavolin and Caol Isla are favourites but this one is out on its own.

I received this as a retirement prezzie last week. It's all gone now and I'm certainly going to by more and keep it on the shelves for guesties. An ideal introduction to this type of whisky. Cheers!

it's the exception to the rule of islay malts

Not quite the depth the other islays carry.the complexity not so deep as your laphroaig or port ellen but thats not to say the whisky itself lacks enthusiasm, plenty to keep the tastebuds dancing, very enjoyable.

One of my favorites. Not a very typical Islay malt, but very sophisticated, grainy, smooth taste with delicate herby finish. Hint of smoke and peat too, but quite far from Ardbeg 10y and Lagavulin 16y (which are absolute favorites).

I recently went through the "standard" distillery-bottled expressions of the classic Islay malts (generally 10-12 year old). In this company, Bunnahabhain seems to lack character. It is a nice whisky, if only a bit dull compared to likes of Bowmore, Caol Ila, Laphroaig...

I did not like this whisky at all! it was only half done and the character on the label i am sure is Lord Lucan in disguise!

Absolutely fantastic. Have tried many single malts, and to my senses, Bunnahabhain is the perfect balance of malt sweetness and sea air, neither of which overpowers the other. So smooth, and light, but with layers one would expect from a heavier bodied whiskey. If I could pick just one whiskey, this would be it. Outstanding !!

A wonderful explosion of flavour but with no harshness or aftertaste...well worth a go!!!

  • Joe S. 16 May 2009

Comparable to Highland Park 12, an island malt with a nose that lacks the layer of floweriness of the HP. Vanilla, oak, raisins and smoke. Has a better palate than HP, malt malt malt! Sip and let dram fall to the back of the tongue and hold...sweeeet! Then let it cascade down the sides. Finish is chocolatey. Extremely enjoyable this is.
