A mix of heavy bodied Wedderburn style rum and medium bodied Plummer, Smith and Cross is an excellent Jamaican rum that's making waves in the bar world. Bottled at 57%, navy strength, and intensely flavoured, this works well in cocktails but also has a depth that rewards those who like to sip their rum.
No Added Sugar or Flavourings
What you might call a proper Jamaican rum. This is no smooth, sweet South American (with all the sugar and additives that often entails) job. It's a pot-still banger. Strong, complex and unique flavours. If you're a sweet, spiced rum fan this is going to take some getting used to. It has the Jamaican rum 'funk' - load of distillates that get carried over in the production, leaving a lot of esters in the mix. This gives complex flavours, with the well known one being banana or overripe fruit. The end result is endlessly interesting. Each sip is different to the last.
Agree 100% with everyone who says it's an aromatic, flavorful, powerful rum to enjoy on its own. I would say that it's also amazing, even essential, in some cocktails. The Bitter Mai Tai needs something with the heft of this rum, as does the Angostura Colada. The flavor profile is to die for no matter how you choose to sip it.
Don’t mix this rum. On the rocks it’s an infinitely complex blend of mature fruit, vanilla and sugars. I want to pair it (on the rocks) with a Cohiba or Bolivar. Again, don’t mix it. It takes over a cocktail and not how you expect from a rum. Take it on its own terms. Cigar permitted and encouraged
i m not much of a drinker but i tried the cocktail old navy grogue at Barlaban. waw... asked to try it pure. my nose loves it and the tast is wow both heavenly, blowing, blasting... so much better pure... and I am a girl ;)
Your first sip of this rum with make you say "Wow!" This is a classical style rum fermented using ambient yeast, and distilled using real pot stills. The ambient yeast gives it a hint of a tangy flavor, that's a little like sourdough bread. This is how all rum was made before they started using test tube grown yeast in modern times. The pot still makes sure that all the flavors of molasses and sugar cane survive the distillation process. If you want to know what the finest rum tasted like in the 1600s, this is it!
