Product Description
Distilled during Islay whisky’s golden era in the 1970s, this anniversary edition of Caol Ila was bottled in 1996. Light sherry cask influence brings some dried fruits and umami that underpin a palate of green fruit, citrus, seawater and woodruff. Restrained peat smoke and subtle tropical notes remind us that we’re experiencing a bygone era of whisky making. The back label on this bottling lists the names of all the staff working at Caol Ila in 1996, a lovely detail that reminds us of the people that made this spectacular bottling possible.

Tasting Notes
Tasting Notes by Billy A
Nose
Gentle green ferns, caramel covered digestive biscuits, sweet butter, vanilla and a hint of baked bean funkiness. Honeysuckle and other floral hints, a touch of wax, pineapple kubes, smokey charcoal and a touch of leather.
Palate
Musty and gently peaty with hessian sacks, bung cloth, vanilla custard, pepper, spicy leather, beeswax polish, menthol, moss, earth and spicy peat.
Finish
Spicy with sweet old wood, anis, damp leaves and sweet peat.
Comment
It's pretty special.
Tasting Notes by Rocky
Nose
Almost luscious nose, with chocolate, parma violets and a hint of struck match. Again, as with the 12 year old, smoky bacon notes appeared when left to sit.
Palate
What can only be described as a veritable explosion of flavour on the palate, with soot, grapefruit and passion fruit the most abundant. A big whisky, this is almost south coast of Islay in style.
Finish
Very, very long, with a rich and creamy texture and tropical fruit flavours in abundance. Just exceptional.
Comment
Sometimes almost ‘mythical’ bottlings don’t live up to their hype, but this is one that certainly does. My overall impression was just one word long – ‘wow’. If you have a chance to ever buy a bottle of this, almost whatever the cost, I’d say go for it. This is one of those whiskies that is going to be up there in my top whiskies for a long, long time.
