Product Description

An interesting twist on Woodford Reserve's classic straight bourbon. The whiskey is first matured in new charred white oak barrels, as usual, but before bottling is transferred to special heavily toasted, lightly charred finishing barrel. This gives it quite a different flavour to normal, with lots of spicy oak coming through on the palate.

Toasting vs Charring

The second cask used to mature Woodford Reserve Double Oaked is heavily toasted and lightly charred - but what’s the difference between those two terms, and how does it affect the whiskey?

Toasting

Toasting is an essential process by which heat is applied to the cask staves in order to bend them into shape. The heat penetrates deep into the wood, softening the oak tannins and breaking down wood sugars to release caramel, spice, coconut and vanilla notes into the spirit. The harder you toast, the more flavour you get - in particular vanilla and spice. Toasted, uncharred barrels are great for creating punchy, spicy spirits without the round edges created by the addition of char.

Charring

Charring is, as the name suggests, going further than toasting and briefly applying flame directly to the wood. This creates a shallow layer of carbon ash on the surface of the stave which acts as a filter for the harsher elements within the whiskey, making it smoother. The sugars in the wood are also caramelised during charring, so you get more sweet caramel flavours, coconut and honey flavours from a charred barrel.

    Panos,

An excellent flavourfull bourbon for those who would love a strong oaky taste. I am a scotch guy but whenever I wanna go to bourbon this one is my first choice along with Wild Turkey Rare breed.

    Anonymous,

Such an incredible bourbon. Rich and smooth and with a great aroma. The addition of the charring really sets it apart. One to enjoy neat.

    Brad,

My all-time favorite bourbon (all-time being 3 years of bourbon drinking for me). I always keep an open bottle and a backup in reserve, but I stick to store picks. Maybe it's just psychological that they taste better, because they're obviously not single-barrel versions, given the fact that double-oaked is finished in a second barrel.

    Nathan,

This is such a nice bourbon. I was a bit sceptical about it before purchasing but decided to bite the bullet and try it and honestly it’s earned a permanent place on my shelf.

    Tomas,

I have to admit, this is one fine bourbon. Smooth leathery caramel sweet taste with long, tannin wine like finishing. No sharpness at all. Highly satisfied even though I am scotch whisky type.
