Product Description
The opening entry in Harviestoun's much loved range of whisky cask matured beers, Ola Dubh 12 is made by resting the brewery's Old Engine Oil for about 6 months in casks that formerly held 12 year old Highland Park. Heavy, rich and with an excellent balance of sweet and savoury flavours, it's a great dinner accompaniment.

Producer's Notes
Ola Dubh 12 pours black with a modest spattered head that reduces slowly, leaving behind textbook lacing. The aroma is delicious; smoky Worcestershire sauce, leather, iodine and grilled steak. Flavours of smoky-sweet malts, roasted peat, coffee beans and a well-bittered finish. Overall this is a rather exotic brew with a defined barrel influence. It’s refined rather than over the top and very delicious indeed.
Tasting Notes by Billy A
The Ola Dubh 12 year old is definitely a different beast to the Old Engine Oil that it is based on, with a very sweet nose backed up by an umami-rich soy sauce note. The sweetness comes from stewed raisin and berry flavours, along with an astringent but sweet liquorice touch.
To taste it’s again much lighter than the nose and colour suggest, with sweet fruit quickly swamped by dark roasted malt. Fortunately, stopping it from becoming unbalanced, the rich stewed fruit hangs around underneath.
It finishes with char, Marmite and lots of bitterness initially, with some fruit creeping around the sides of the tongue as it lingers.

This is not a beer. It's art. Enjoy.
I thought it was a great beer had a set of 3 as gift really enjoyed them buying some sets for gifts this christmas and some for myself
Heavy is an understatement when it comes to this beer. So thick you can almost chew it! Great taste with a whisky aroma permeating throughout. A beautiful beast of a beer.
Nosing it carefully I can''t find anything that would particularly remind me of Highland Park. There is some woodiness in the taste that is familiar to a whisky fan but the dominant bouquet here is that of heavy, hayish porter with a bit of fishy smokiness. Taste has Tervaleijona tar candy sweetness that''s unusual for a beer. This has something in common with a Finnish beer that''s finished in (IIRC) bourbon casks in that in both there is a kind of a ghost of whisky touching the product but to be honest I''ve yet to be convinced this whisky casking of beer is a great idea.
