Hakushu Distiller's Reserve
Product Description

The flagship Hakushu single malt is a masterclass in balance. It is made by combining different styles of whisky – all produced in the same place – including bright, young whiskies with much older stock and a small proportion of heavily peated whisky. The result is a fragrant dram with notes of cucumber, white fruit, soft herbs and the barest hint of smoke. Excellent served neat or long with ice in a classic Whisky Highball.

Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Andy M

    • Nose

Quite herbaceous. Green fruit, mint, cucumber, pine, grassy, spearmint. Just loads of green fruit in this one.

    • Palate

Loads of green things coming out of here! Mint, cucumber, green fruit, grapefruit and just a touch of smoke at the back. Dave Broom got yuzu…I’ve never heard of yuzu….

    • Finish

Light, delicate, refreshing and some subtle smoke.

This is so easy to drink. It’s fresh, easy going (almost too easy) and just divine. I wrote delicious at the top and circled it! That’s a big thumb up in my world.

Hakushu logo

One of the most spectacular distilleries in the world, Hakushu is nestled in the forested slopes of the Japanese Alps. The site was built in the early-1970s to support its sister distillery, Yamazaki, in supplying whisky to a country in the midst of an economic boom. Today, Hakushu still contributes to Suntory’s blends – including the iconic Hibiki – but its single malts have a formidable reputation around the world.

The Forest Distillery

Hakushu’s great strength is its versatility. The vast stillhouse there is capable of producing a broad range of different spirit types. By combining these, Suntory’s whisky makers are able to create complex and layered single malts like Hakushu Distiller’s Reserve. Even with this great diversity in production, Hakushu maintains a unique and recognisable house style often showing a fresh, herbal character that reflects its woodland home.

    Neill707,

I agree with the other reviews. It tasted clean with no after taste. The cucumber reference is well deserved as it tastes fresh. Easily drunk neat. Be careful as you’ll drink too much!

    Anonymous,

Under-rated in my opinion- mainly, it’s very interesting in flavour, not a deep layered whisky but also unlike most, so I liked it for that reason

    AdrianTuschka,

A young lively bright whisky. On the nose: a cool breathe of mint and vanilla coming from the strong interaction with American oak, the Japanese change of seasons is truly present in this malt. Floral perfume, melon. Some hints of smoke and earthy moss. On the palate: creamy and clear as spring water, very in line with the nose. Not very deep, but lively and focussed. It is said to contain a lightly peated young spirit above 8yo and a strongly peated spirit above 18yo. The younger whisky sets the tone: a great serene character which reflects the pine forests around the distillery (and less complex than the Hakushu 12yo).

    Anonymous,

A truly special whisky. It's very Green, a start that commences with a fruity mouth like biting info a fresh apple after settling swallowing ice cold water with lime and mint in it.... Then a subtle lapsang souchong flavoured shortbread finish. I can't do this justice and I'm normally very verbose

    Hitsuji,

This is our favourite Japanese whisky. It is clean and refreshing. We once visited the distillery where Hakushu was produced, and fell in love with this. They did something called 'highball from the wood' using Hakushu, which was sublime. Last year, we discovered as its popularity soared, Suntory had run out of the liquid and stopped shipping Hakushu as well as Yamazaki. I was therefore very pleased to find a reasonably priced bottle of Hakushu on Whisky Exchange.
