Suntory Hakushu Distiller's Reserve Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Andy M

Nose: Quite herbaceous.  Green fruit, mint, cucumber, pine, grassy, spearmint.  Just loads of green fruit in this one.

Palate: Loads of green things coming out of here! Mint, cucumber, green fruit, grapefruit and just a touch of smoke at the back.  Dave Broom got yuzu…I’ve never heard of yuzu…

Finish: Light, delicate, refreshing and some subtle smoke.

Comments: This is so easy to drink.  It’s fresh, easy going (almost too easy) and just divine.  I wrote delicious at the top and circled it! That’s a big thumb up in my world.

Wonderfully smooth clean flavour on the pallet. Given to me as a present by son inlaw who either thinks a lot of me or wants something. So easy to drink as others have noted so could work out as an expensive pastime.

This is a great whisky, then I look at what scotch malt I can buy for similar money and it is one of the many. I would recomend but not sure i would buy it again

First Japanese whisky I've tried normally a speyside drinker but loved it its probably more interesting than tasty but goes in like water and hits the back of your tounge with the complexity of a physicist on caffeine. really enjoyed

I got plenty of forestry smells from this one. Smooth to drink, and a nice kick on the aftertaste.

Like all from the Suntory stable. It is perfection in a glass. And that''s the problem with it, it''s too well rounded and balanced. No hidden corners. I liken to getting into a bath of hot water. Perfect temperature perfect depth the lot. Where as my best baths sometimes start of with ouch a bit too hot but once it you just know you''re going to enjoy the soak. I like my whisky sessions where sometimes the pain of the 1st sip ensure you''re going have a good relaxing soak. That''s why I gave it a 4. A brilliant yet functional young single malt with no rough edges to cling onto to say I''ve been there and done that.

I love this whiskey. It''s floral, green and grapefruit. My only whinge is that it's cheaper in Japan. The mark up by the importers (not this website) is a tad steep after tax.

No ''herbacious'' or ''green'' in my glass - and I hardly detect smoke. Its a straightforward, typically well made Japanese Malt, and definitely VERY enjoyable & easy to drink. Its an entry level malt so a tad firey (8 years old?) No Yuzu, no Shisho, no Cucumber, no floral descriptions etc.

Love the nose - yuzu is there alright. Shisho, white flowers, citrus fruits and a tinge of green peppers. It''s a young one - a bit rough on the entry and less complex, smoky and grippy than the 12 year old but I''d drink this every day just because it''s so prettily made.

Lovely. Tried this on whiskey tasting with some friends, was towards the end of the evening though.... Looking forward to another try. Clean and clear compared to the yamazaki, a little sweek, a little smokey, and a little minty!

Very nice and clean whisky although it can taste a bit young compared to the 12yo (it's a non age statement, made with apparently nothing less than 8 year old whiskies). At less than £40 a bottle and if you don't want to spend more for the excellent 12yo, you can't really go wrong with this.
