Derrumbes Michoacan Mezcal Reviews
Tasting Notes by Billy A
Nose: Sharp vegetal notes: ferns, fresh cut grass and pine needles. It also has a sweet, almost Chinese-style sweetcorn soup, note, with nail varnish remover and wood ash. There are touches of white wine vinegar, without although without the acid hit that suggests, and freshly cracked stone.
Palate: Intense agave pepper and sweet fruit to start, quickly calming to a mineral-heavy, sweet tropical fruit juice character, although with a strong, agave pepperiness and the woody smoke from the nose.
Finish: Long, with stones, camp fires and apples.
Producer's Tasting Notes
Very different to the Oaxaca, Derrumbes Michoacan is initially more subtle.
Fresh on the nose, you find notes of green apple and runner beans before more perfumed, floral notes appear. These more delicate aromas give way to a pungent sweetness, ripe pears, and notes of pine and a hint of smokiness.
On the palate, you initially detect sweet characters, parma violets and honey but these are soon overpowered by a dry spiciness fostered by a stringent smoky character.
On the finish, the dryness eventually gives way to a more sweet character that leaves a very pleasant mouthfeel.
