Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Producer's Tasting Notes

    • Hakushu is the Japanese connoisseurs choice. The distillery, which was built in 1973 and is set amidst spectacular pine forests close to Japanese Alps.

Hakushu 12yo has aroma of pears, crushed leafy bracken a hint of citrus. You can enjoy subtle smokiness and the sweet poached pears on the palate.

  • Tasting Notes by Dave Broom

    • Nose

Light and grassy and slightly stony to start. In time there’s sweet persimmon and nut.

    • Palate

Pure and very clean. Sweet lime, green fruits then a hint of smoke and a buttery meadow sweet/chamomile note. Light to the point of fragility.

    • Finish

Honey, lemon and a little ginger.

    • Comment

Delicacy to the fore. A breakfast dram if there were ever one.

  • Tasting Notes by Martine Nouet

    • Nose

Fruity and sweet. Ripe cherry plums, almond milk, acacia honey.

    • Palate

Smooth and velvety. A caressing feel, quite thick. Good balance. As fruity as on the nose. Plums with a hint of prunes.

    • Finish

Medium, with a pleasant dry spiciness. Soothes down on an almondy note.

    • Comment

A perfectly balanced dram. Fruit and spices mingle gently.

    Greg,

2nd bottle of Japanese whisky and my favorite. Added one ice cube on recommendation and added another level of complexity and balance. Loved it!

    monte#4,

My absolute favourite fr the Suntory stable. A whisky for contemplation when time stood still as the world goes by.

    Jason H,

My first foray into the Japanese single malts (all other Jap whiskies I've tried to date have been blends) and this did *not* disappoint. Very light color, a bit more on the nose than I'm used to for the Jap stuff but wow what delightful flavours. So well balanced and refined. Subtle smokiness and peat with the slight sweetness of the pear as a delicious aftertaste. An ice cube or two gives you 3 or 4 different drinks as the water seemingly opens up different compartments of this complex, and yet light/delicate single malt. Definitely at the top of my list of Japanese whisky thus far. An easy 5 stars.

    AZdramMAN,

I had heard that Japanese whiskey was something to behold. I was in the market for my usual Bowmore and Lagavulin but felt compelled to pick up a bottle to see what the Japanese with a single malt. WOW!!! I was blown away after the first sip! Light, citrus up front followed by a smooth sweetness. The perfect dram for a hot summer evening in Arizona. I highly recommend his masterful whiskey.
