Tasting Notes

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by Stuart P

    • Nose

Beguiling aromas of apricots, orange blossom and marmalade, bolstered by subtle spiciness, too – cinnamon and clove. Elegant and seductive.

    • Palate

The generous fruit continues on to the palate, with oranges and apricots in abundance. There’s a little peppery spice, but the soft, succulent fruit takes hold. Nice balance, and nicely crafted.

    • Finish

The spiciness takes over from the fruit and lingers, along with a little barrel char.

    • Comment

Something of a baby compared with much older Hibiki bottlings, this retains the classic soft, elegant orange-blossom character and generous fruitiness, with a little spice to help things along.

  • Producer's Tasting Notes

    • Colour

      Amber.

    • Nose

Rose, lychee, hint of rosemary, mature woodiness, sandalwood.

    • Palate

Honey-like sweetness, candied orange peel, white chocolate.

    • Finish

Subtle, tender long finish, with hint of Mizunara (Japanese oak).

Landscape

Creating blends is a tricky business at the best of times but that was especially true in 1980s Japan. Suntory couldn’t depend on the Scotch whisky model of sourcing stock from hundreds of distilleries, as It was the first true whisky producer in the country. So, circumstance dictated that Suntory be self-sufficient and that each of its distilleries produce a wide spectrum of styles and flavours.

Harmony

Hibiki Harmony is the culmination of this work, it contains malt whiskies from Yamazaki and Hakushu, as well as grain whisky from the versatile Chita distillery. Yamazaki offers harmonious fruit notes and a round sweetness to the blend, Hakushu imparts a green, herbal and elegantly smoky character and Chita provides the backbone to the whisky with honey and spiced notes. These broad styles are drawn from five different cask types including Mizunara and ex-sherry casks before being expertly blended under the watchful eye of master blender Shinjiro Torii.

The House of Suntory

For more than a century, Suntory has been the last word in Japanese whisky. Click below to explore our range of expressions from the venerable House of Suntory, which includes fine old single malts and more variations on the classic Hibiki.

    MargaretJ,

I tried this chilled but without ice. It had a lovely fruity-cum-spicy aroma and taste. Although I really enjoyed it, I didn't think it was a significant improvement on my usual single malt.

    john barker,

Striking amber colour with a pleasant aroma, drank over ice it was smooth with a subtle bite but no prolonged after taste. Very nice over all and would be a welcome gift.

    Great tasting whiskey

    Nickyf,

The first thing that strikes you is the pale golden colour. We tried it over ice for the first taste but would prefer it with a mixer. It has an aroma of fruit reminiscent of rum. It was ok but we aren't regular whisky drinkers and have found others smoother and not as harsh as this one.

    Sally Smith,

Pale, no real aroma. Drank neat. A light/weak flavour. A bit thin on taste.
