Chartreuse Elixir Vegetal is a punchy but beautiful liqueur made to an original 'elixir of life' recipe revived by the Carthusian monks in the 18th century. Recommended on a sugar cube or slightly diluted with sugary water.

Nose
Like falling face-first into a herb garden. Dill, caraway, mint, basil and oregano are all present.
-
Palate
Undiluted, it shows an incredibly concentrated herbaceousness, but the alcohol isn’t overpowering. With water added (to bring it down to around 40% abv), a sweeter eucalyptus note appears.
-
Finish
Long, medicinal, and herby, with a dry mint-toothpaste sensation at the very end.
-
Comment
I can understand why it was created as a reviving tonic. It’s very herbal and shows a medicinal flavour profile. For me, it is too pungent neat, and needs water to open up.
-
Serving suggestion
Add a few drops of sugar syrup – the sweetness and the herbaceousness complement each other perfectly.

I have been drinking the regular Green Chartreuse for almost 50 years: straight (no ice cubes or any other stuff added!), and either cold or room temperature. Sipping it, that is. It is remarkably "soft" for being 110 proof. And it definitely helps me think clearly (again, sipping it slowly). I love the taste. Those monks have a good thing going. I highly recommend Green Chartreuse.

Wonderful, also great to put a teaspoon or two in a cup of coffee. It almost makes you wish to be a bit under the weather as this was originally for Monks who were below par!!!

Yum! My parents brought this back from a visit to the monastery in the 1970's, when "the troubles" were at their worst in Northern Ireland and it made us all feel better. It still tastes equally good diluted and full strength on a sugar cube.

I've been a fan of Chartreuse Elixir for several years now, after I was given a bottle by a friend for my birthday. It forms part of my own custom recipe Old Fashioned - Bulleit Rye, Giffard Sugar Syrup, Angostura Bitters, and a dash of Elixir to complete the spicy, herbal, sweet drink of kings!

It has been on my counter since getting it near Le Puy, France some yrs ago now. I was turned onto something the presenter at the tour verde said about it being healthy as well as being able to use it as a drink, but I forgot all the details.
