Aged in a first-fill bourbon cask, this 1991-vintage Midleton was chosen by our customers at a special tasting held at The Whisky Exchange shop in 2015. Distilled in November, this sister cask to our award-winning bottling from 2012 is rich and mouth coating with notes of vanilla, cinnamon and green peppers.

Tasting notes by Ollie C
-
Nose
Baked peaches with marzipan and almonds. Fried butter, just before it browns, with some notes of crisp apples and nutmeg.
-
Palate
Soft caramel and biscuit with milk chocolate, like a treat from the left side of Twix factory. Buttered popcorn and baked banana with a coating of brown sugar.
-
Finish
Baked spice – vanilla and cardamom. Desiccated coconut dissipates, leaving a lingering nuttiness.

-
On the nose – lovely potent aromatics, notes of honey, cox apples, cedar wood and red berries. On the palate crème brulee and vanilla pod comes through with a hint of tart tatin with a soft supple spice on the finish. Elegant, light and vibrant yet with surprising depth.

Nose
Vanilla-cream-drizzled fruit salad – apple, pear, grapefruit, mango, banana and more. With the fruit comes a layer of sweet spice, rum cake and a hint of fresh mint.
-
Palate
Soft sweetnes leads, with toffee, caramel and honey spread on buttery brioche. The fruit from the nose follows, with apples and pears now stewed, the bananas slightly green, and the tropical notes sharpened. Darker flavours of chocolate, clove and rye bread hide underneath.
-
Finish
The fruit returns with a dark chocolate coating. The flavour slowly sweetens and then fades through fresh orchard fruit to sweet spice and baked apples.

Comment
A classic Midleton fruit bomb. These sometimes go a bit too far for me, delving into the world of wine gums and gummi bears, but this is all fresh fruit and buttery sweetness. An excellent whiskey.

Producer's Tasting Notes
-
Nose
Lots of aromatic oils and spices, typical of this style of Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey. A touch of linseed-infused tobacco balances with a little menthol, while some succulent fleshy melon, ripe banana and kiwi are given added zest with a twist of lime and crushed blackcurrant leaves. Some vanilla sweetness softens the fruit as the charred oak of the barrel adds to the complexity.
-
Taste
The anticipated luxurious mouth-coating texture is full of rich ripe fruit and spices. Soft vanilla develops into the sweet spices of cinnamon and a touch of clove in harmony with the succulence of green bell peppers and the hint of cedar wood.
-
Finish
The rich succulence is slow to fade, leaving charred oak and barley to finish.
