Nose: musty old leather like old leather boots or old leather book bindings, tobacco Christmas cake, liquorish fruit like plums and boiled sweets. Taste: yup you can tell this is old with the damp old leather like taste hits first just like a 40 year old Metaxa grand Olympian reserve does denoting its age, thin and oily with golden syrup and treacle - (Not Thick) - and those humbugs but not that mint part the chewy soft part, soft golden Virginia tobacco and hint of anise and oak. Finish: long and lingering with those dark treacle and tobacco notes along with ripe plums and a touch of spice. Conclusion: A masterpiece from a company who knows how vital barrel interaction and time affects the taste of a distillate like rum. Unlike some whisky rum just gets better and better if left alone in a oak barrel in a damp corner of the warehouse as time is the most important friend of a dark rum along with barrel age at the time of barrelling. Once or twice I had the opportunity to buy some very very rare bottles of Metaxa Grand Olympian Reserve and Grand Fine both bottled at the ripe age of 40 years old and even though it was a brandy the flavours were very similar only the Metaxa was more fruity and deep with this liquorice and tobacco as well as old musty leather notes denoting its age. I give this the highest score I’ve ever gave a rum 95 out a 100 knocking Ron Zacapa from its position of 93 so it’s a very intensely enjoyable rum and I would also like to point out that it’s at cask strength so your going to get more out of it. P.S. TWE please buy more old Metaxa brandy as there wonderfully enjoyable.
