Westland's peated malt is made with a proportion of very heavily peated whisky combined with unpeated, aged in American oak. An excellent balance between smoke and fruit, with notes of earth, green herbs and roasted nuts.

Nose
The nose starts off with a background of nuttiness accompanied by smouldering moss and flamed orange peel.

Palate
The peat leaps from the palate, expressing campfire notes, iodine, and roasted pistachios. With time, the smouldering moss on the nose evolves into burning embers and roasted plantains. The palate also transitions over time, moving towards significant earth notes, green herbs and increasing iodine towards the finish.

Like historians of yore penning war accounts decades or centuries after the fact, I am writing about this dram many months after I had it. Details on tasting notes are therefore hazy and I could be tempted to partake in some Venerable Bede-esque embellishment, but I can tell you that this was a corker. Could pass it under even the most discerning drinker's nose and they would tell you it's a Scotch; not just because of the peat but the overall effect. It's big, leaping out of the glass, but with the well-mannered control of Fred Astaire tapping out a long-honed routine. Well worth a try if you see it on a bar's shelf, or on your own shelf at home.
