Producer's Tasting Notes
Colour: Vibrant gold.
Nose: Full-bodied, smooth. A mellow peat softly coats the aromatic palette at first, growing more powerful with time, as smoke, soot and salty notes transcend the initial nose. The aromas then evolve towards candied citrus fruit (lemon, orange), black liquorice and spices (nutmeg, ginger), and opens up with roots and dried twig aromas. Heady and floral (carnation, iris), it grows increasingly complex.
Palate: Firm, powerful. A well-balanced attack gives equal footing to aromas of peat, smoke, spices, fresh fruit (melon, kiwi) and nuts (almond, walnut), which it delivers in spades. The mid-palate starts off with chocolate notes, but the peat soon takes the lead once again.
Finish: Long, silky. Extremely mature, it overflows with ripe fruit (pear, Mirabelle plum, apple). The peat starts taking on an herbaceous and malty character, while the salty flavours gives the finish plenty of depth and coastal freshness. The final nose offers menthol, spicy (coriander, dill) and earthy (leather, chestnuts) notes.

This whisky delivers on all levels, strong smell of sherry with a hint of peat. Smokey finish but not overpowering or present in the nose. Excellent Japanese whisky that ticks all the boxes. Well worth the money
First time buyer of Japanese whisky and not disappoint. The Whisky is smooth with a smoky finish benefiting from a drop of room temperature water. Sipping this whisky reminded me of less peaty Scottish malts. Overall a very drinkable and enjoyable dram. Think 3.5 star rating is accurate for me. Would I accept this Whisky as an alternative to a Scottish malt of similar character, no. Would I refuse it as a gift, not likely!
gentle and smooth wonderful after taste.touch of sweetness and a hint of peat .A wonderful smooth whisky
Before Adding Water Nose: Very light peat (faint) smoke/leather (similar to Taketsuru 17yo but not at the same level) Fall leaves and late summer/fall flowers Hint of sweetness - vanilla /cooked sugar Ripe fruits - citrus (a touch of sour) Taste: Faint hint of peat/smoke and leather Nut - mixed Fresh on the palate After a little water Nose: Ripe fruits (sour) still there (but faint) Nuttiness comes out more Light smoke/peat (more faint now) Less floral (takes a big back seat for me) Taste: Hint of spice Oak (appears) And what was mentioned earlier A few comments about this NAS SMW: 1. Don't expect this to be exactly identical to any Aged Statement Yoichi whiskies 2. It keeps many of the Yoichi characteristics, but they are all subtle. 3. In other words, there is no one dominant flavor that stands out. 4. Thus, the layering of flavors makes you work at it all and it is a fun adventure. 5. This is a whisky which needs a lot of time. I spent 30 minutes on it and that is because I wanted to get a comment out here as soon as I could. I am guessing time, like most SMWs will allow the exploration to be much greater for the experience. It might not be what Yoichi lovers want, but I am not at all disappointed. Several weeks after these notes were written I noticed that this NAS SMW has developed more. After having been open for a while and more whisky exposed to air, there is more peat to the nose and to the taste. Very pleased. If I could give this 4.5 stars I would, but for now 4 will have to do.
