I have been making home cocktails for a few years and have used all manner of aromatised wines but only just came upon this wonder. The present Caperitif is a loose re-interpretation of an aromatised quinquina wine popular in Europe in the 1920s. The original had pride of place in the Savoy Cocktail Book where it proved an extremely versatile mixer: seven cocktails, most with predictable South African names follow the simple recipe: 1 part any spirit under the sun, 1 part Caperitif, maybe angostura or a drop of liqueur. Its intense herbaceousness adds a wonderful nose to even the most mundane spirits - it can do no wrong with rye, rum, or calvados but when partnered with gin or cognac it truly shines. And, despite the quinqina, it is not really bitter - there is a hint of something sharp but it dissipates, overtaken by the vibrancy of Southern cape herbs. Try it 1:1:1 with gin and fino sherry and a swath of lemon for the subtle and delightful Jabberwock, or 1:1 with cognac, half a spoonful of orange liqueur and a dash of Angostura for the intense and luscious Barney Barnato. Why is this beauty not more well known?

Stunning, had this first in South Africa and been searching for somewhere to buy it in the UK. Full of flavour but not overpowering, a firm favorite.
