Customer Rating
Bottled exclusively for The Whisky Exchange, this marriage of two hogsheads is a classic example of Caol Ila. Rich and peaty with notes of mint, barley sugar, apples and liquorice.

Caol Ila 2009 Reviews

Tasting Notes

  • Tasting Notes by The Whisky Exchange

Nose: Sweet, with earthy peat smoke, barley sugar, mint and pine. Stormy seas and bandages follow.

Palate: Sweetness, coal dust and peat lead. Then liquorice, chocolate and apples, before peppery pine.

Finish: Pine, mint, menthol and barley sugar slowly fade to leave singed apples and liquorice.

  • Tasting Notes by Billy Abbott

Nose: Sweet and candied, with earthy peat and pungent smoke. Barley sugar and spearmint tussle with freshly dropped pine needles and piles of green leaves, with a background of stormy seas, medicine cabinets and cloth bandages.

Palate: A burst of sweetness gives way to TCP, brine and orchard fruit. Coal stoves, coal dust and smokily burning peat build, along with liquorice, 100% cocoa chocolate and intensely fruity stewed apples. Pine and menthol pop-up before the end, with a menthol tingle and peppery spice.

Finish: Pine, mint, menthol and barley sugar slowly fade to leave singed apples, liquorice and smouldering oak.

Comment: A fresh and fruity Caol Ila, balancing sweetness with sharpness and a complex smokiness that belies its comparative youth.

Not your typical Islay. Less intense smoke with an more rounded flavour. Its only weakness is it's younger years. PS Caol Ila is one of the Islay's I haven't tried so can't compare this to their standard.
