Product Description
The Aberlour A'Bunadh range is a love letter to the distillery’s original style of whisky, made with 19th-century methods and matured solely in sherry casks.
Each small batch in the range is based on the contents of a bottle from the late 1800s which was allegedly discovered by workmen almost a century later and analysed in a lab – after the workmen had drunk most of it, of course.
Every limited-edition batch of this no-age-statement single malt is slightly different, but all are distinguished by a rich and sweet character thanks to their sherry incubation. This edition, Batch 59, is slightly lower in alcohol than its predecessors and delivers spice, orange and sherry on the nose, followed by cherry, ginger and chocolate flavours and a robust long finish.
In case you were wondering how to pronounce A’bunadh, a Gaelic word loosely translating to ‘original’, it’s ah-boon-arh.

Not as good as batch 55, but still excellent
This batch 59 is quite disappointing compared to earlier batches. I’ve tried most batches up to 52, and I regarded them as very consistent and always a favourite for me. There is a definite difference with this, still warming, but harsh and not much of a sherry hit on the nose or taste.
Best whiskey from speyside hands down. Came to the US of A really fast
The 59 is a far less complex and has less depth than the 58. Sherry notes are diminished substantially. There is a predominance of bitter dark chocolate and spices. The impression I got was that the spirit hadn’t spent long enough in the barrel or that the barrels were third fill. I was disappointed but as the a’bunadh 59 is widely available at a reduced price it is probably still worth buying...but only just.
This is hardly less alcoholic at nearly 61% than earlier versions. Adding still water is a must and brings out the flavours of Citrus fruits and Spices. As it lingers rich Christmas cake with hints of Ginger come to the fore with an added subtle influence of polished leather. A little masterpiece.
